Elizabeth Waterston's Honours and Awards

On June 29, 2018 Elizabeth Waterston was appointed to the Order of Canada. This honour recognized Dr. Waterston as an early champion of Canadian literature as an academic field. This includes her important research about historical Canadian travel literature, co-founding of the Canadian Children's Literature Journal and her early and important research about Lucy Maud Montgomery. Her mentorship of Canadian writers was also noted in the citation listing Elizabeth Waterston as a member of the Order of Canada.

In November 2011 Elizabeth Waterston was made a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

On January 27, 2011 Elizabeth Waterston was named to the Order of Ontario in recognition of her lifetime contributions to Canadian culture and literature. The citation reads: "Elizabeth Waterston is a researcher, writer and expert on Canadian writers. She has fostered the study of Canadian literature in high schools and Universities since the 1950s and mentored upcoming writers."

Keynote speaker at national and international conferences in Finland, Denmark, Spain, Scotland, the United States, Canada, and Sweden, 1972-2009. Organizer and Chairman of international conferences at Guelph. Visiting Professor, University of Edinburgh Centre for Canadian Studies in 1981.

Founding member, Association of Canadian University Teachers of English, Association for Candian and Quebec Literatures, and Canadian Society for American Studies. Moderator of panels at Learned Societies including, ACUTE, ACQL, CSAS, Scottish Studies Association, Association for Canadian Children’s Literature and Humanities Association of Canada. National President, Canadian Association of Chairmen of English, 1974-77; National President, Humanities Association of Canada, 1973-77.

Assessor for Canada Council and SSHRC grants, Leave Fellowships, Killam research grants, Horizon grants, and on funding international conferences; external assessor for promotions and tenure cases at University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, McMaster University, University of Manitoba, York University. Assessor and for Departments of English; external examiner for Ph.D. candidates, including in Scotland and Finland. Advisor to Canada Council on Research Priorities in Canadian Studies.

Consultant on Canadian studies for English Teachers’ Associations in Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg, and London.

Consultant on manuscripts for University and other Presses.

Co-founder and co-editor of Canadian Children's Literature.

Member, editorial board of English Studies in Canada and of Scottish Tradition.

The University of Guelph has instituted a Mary Henley Rubio and Elizabeth Waterston L.M. Montgomery Archival Endowment at the University of Guelph.
